| Infra red setup |
  |
Requirements:
PC with infra-red data port (laptop is ideal)
Windows 95 (possible with 98 says Nokia, but the
hardware we've tried don't like it) NT 4 is an option if
you are confident NT will recognise you PCs IR port.
Nokia data suite 1.2 (apparently version 2 works,
however you will need to Varity you own a Nokia cable
(costly kit), by using it in the set-up procedure)
A data enabled Nokia 6110 or variation (some Orange
phones have the infra-red port at the bottom) just call
your operator and ask them to allow you to use the phone
for data, BT Cellnet do it within a couple of seconds
and you'll be given two new numbers (fax and data) don't
stress at this point about remembering the numbers as
you don't need them for this exercise.
Patience (it very rarely works first time)
Procedure:
In the control panel of Win 95 click windows system
check out what com port your generic IR port is assigned
to, it lives within the ports menu. (see below) make
sure you make a note of what com port is used in the
example below it's COM 2.
Unzip the Nokia datasuite.
Run set-up, proceed with install Nokia datasuite 1.2
When prompted to connect phone via cable, don't worry
not cable needed in Nokia Data Suite (NDS) 1.2 just pick
com port you are not currently using (0-6), the above
example com 2 &3 is in use so pick 4. Now you may
find NDS errors and says it can't find the phone, that's
kool just keep on going.
Now you've got NDS installed. In the start
menu/programs/Nokia cellular data suite/ run Infrared
set-up.
It takes a while, just chill and get hold of the note of
the com port your IR port is assigned to, when prompted
select the com port you've noted.
Get hold of your Nokia, press the menu, up then OK to
enable infra-red, now you've got 1 minuet to get the
infra-red enabled or you need to re-enable it.
Point the Nokia and PC infra-red ports to each other. (
we've had it working about 5ft apart with line of sight
but the closer the better)
Click OK on the infra-red set-up. NDS will do some
checks then install the infra-red MODEM on you system,
as highlighted in the screen shot above COM 3. That's
it.
Make a dialup connect using the newly installed software
MODEM to your ISP (note if your using BT Cellnet and
it's a 0800 ISP you need to drop the zero)
Enable the infra-red on the phone, point a PC run the
new dialup connection, your Nokia will flash a bit and
LCD will display the number of the ISP and a big D next
to it inform you that your making an expensive data
call, but it's worth it in our opinion.
Thats it!
